What I learnt from Mayorkun
What I learned from this episode with Mayorkun is that there are too many unprepared people in the world. Everyday, I meet a young person who wants to be an artiste. There like, “time is going! time is going! I need to blow. Other people are blowing” etc.
And I’ve always thought to myself, shouldn’t you spend time honing your craft?Shouldn’t you spend time building your repertoire before trying to pay influencers to push your song, before trying to engage ‘payola’ with radio presenters, before trying to get a manager? Shouldn’t you, first, hone your craft?
I’ve interviewed a lot of hot, trendy musicians from Fireboy to Peruzzi to Niniola and Temi, Joeboy — all of them — and I keep hearing the same thing: they were prepared. So what looked like luck was not luck.
When David saw Mayorkun’s performance on Twitter, Mayorkun was prepared. He had been honing his craft as a musician for years before. So when the opportunity came, he was prepared. It didn’t matter how many Twitter threads he did. It didn’t matter how many retweets he got. If the music didn’t sound good when Davido was listening, we would not be here today.
There are too many unprepared people in the world who are looking for a quick fix for blowing. Well, Mayorkun, 26, Superstar says, “Get prepared!”
Quote for the day
“You will not be a big hit right away. You will not get rich quick. You are not so special that everyone will instantly pay attention. No one cares about you. At least not yet. Get used to it...Trade the dream of overnight success for slow, measured growth. It's hard, but you have to be patient. You have to grind it out.” — Jason Fried, David Hansson.
