What I Learnt from My Interview With Reuben Abati
What I learnt from my interview with Reuben Abati is that Power is Transient. And it never ceases to amaze me how often, quickly, and regularly people forget this lesson. In my work, the companies that I run across Africa, I have met and worked with presidents and senators and MDs and celebrities, and I’m always amazed at how they — we — forget that this thing [power] passes. It passes.
A president today with all the power and authority they have, once they are gone, nobody cares. But when people are in that midst of power, they forget.
What Reuben Abati — and he’s a dear mentor of mine — reminded us of is that power is transient, and what truly matters is the kind of life that we live in or out of power. The relationships we build, the people whose lives we touch, the values we live by, the impact of our work, the substance of our souls, that matters above titles, positions, money, net worth, celebrity status.
We should remember that. Don’t let life remind you of something that you should already know.
